I am a visual artist living and working in New Mexico.
I live among generations of families who came long before me,
and my work is deeply influenced by the land, water, and communities they steward.
Inside my studio, I am surrounded by boxes of papers and letters passed down through generations of my own family. They are from times when letter-writing was the only way to speak across oceans. Each letter is poignant, and reminds me that lives of vibrant, loving people — people who, like me, imagined they would live forever — do come to an end. I am so blessed to hold their words, written by hand. I am compelled to get to know these writers — my ancestors — and honor their existence. And so my work is an exploration of the past, and I use their words to craft my present: the flowers that grow, the mountains that rise above me, the stars & planets I see, the birds that visit. In each piece, I create layers and layers of paper, paint and history, then scratch, sand, and scrape to excavate and reveal what is beneath it all. I hope you enjoy my view of this world. I hope my work can do justice to my ancestors, my neighbors, this community, and this earth.
